About
The Ben Youssef Madrasa is a historic Islamic college located in the heart of Marrakech's medina. Founded in the 14th century, it was once one of the largest theological schools in North Africa, accommodating up to 900 students.
The madrasa is a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture, featuring intricate zellij tilework, carved stucco, and stunning cedarwood ceilings. The central courtyard, with its marble basin and surrounding arcades, is a tranquil oasis in the bustling medina.
The student dormitories, arranged around the courtyard, offer a glimpse into the daily life of the students who once lived and studied here. Visitors can explore the prayer hall, the library, and the various rooms where classes were held.
Although the madrasa is no longer a functioning school, it remains an important cultural and historical site in Marrakech. It is a testament to the city's rich intellectual heritage and a beautiful example of Islamic architecture.
